Beyond its primary commitment to achieving its business mission through a wide range of telecom and digital solutions, our company is actively and extensively involved in significant corporate social responsibility initiatives. These programs are focused on strengthening communities by addressing key drivers of long-term nationwide benefits across various sectors, including education, health, humanitarian aid, environmental protection, green legacy, government project support, as well as blood donation and volunteer services. In the recent bygone Ethiopian fiscal year, our company contributed over 694.2 million Birr to the aforementioned sectors, generating significant positive social and economic impacts across the country.
To mark the arrival of the 2017 Ethiopian New Year, our company celebrated New Year’s Eve companywide by offering humanitarian and other forms of support in connection with International Charity Day. This initiative held under the theme “New Beginning and New Hope in the New Year,” continues the company’s tradition of upholding its corporate social responsibility every New Year.
In line with this, under the program’s theme, “The New Year Feeding Program in the Spirit of Kindness/Generosity,” our company contributed over 16.7 million Birr to support the feeding of 8,352 elderly individuals, children, women, and people with physical disabilities in 28 charity centers across the country for the 2017 Ethiopian New Year. It is worth noting that for the 2016 Ethiopian New Year, our company donated 8.89 million Birr to more than 26 local charity organizations, which provided for over 7,112 beneficiaries in their centers nationwide, covering their New Year expenses.
On the same day, as a New Year’s gift and alongside the charity activities, our company, in collaboration with the National Blood Bank and guided by the principle of kindness and generosity, facilitated a blood donation program. Our voluntary employees and management members from corporate, zonal, and regional offices participated by donating blood—an esteemed gift that helps save lives within our community that took place at our 19 centers across the country.
Moreover, in celebration of the New Year under the theme “Hopes of Tomorrow,” our company donated exercise books to over 75,000 students across 930 elementary schools nationwide, investing more than 67.26 million Birr. This donation was made in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, targeting underprivileged students and those from disadvantaged communities affected by drought and security issues. As a public institution, our company is committed to supporting the education sector by easing the economic burden on society, providing essential educational materials to less fortunate students, ensuring they can fully participate in school, and contributing to the national effort to build a better future generation.
Furthermore, our company donated Birr 10 million to support the victims of the recent landslide in Gofa Zone, Geze Gofa District, South Ethiopia. Additionally, following the disaster, our company swiftly introduced a short code and donation system on the telebirr super app and a total of Birr 1.35 million was collected from our customers, bringing the overall contribution to Birr 11.35 million. In addition to implementing the latest telecom technologies, enhancing its digital solutions, and introducing new and affordable telecom products and services to significantly impact society, our company will continue to fulfill its corporate social responsibility and remain dedicated to actively and comprehensively addressing various social issues that positively affect our community and the country as a whole.
